Ultramagnetic MC’s followed Critical Beatdown—one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever—with a disappointing second release. The Four Horsemen was the return. Ced Gee’s beats are back on point, built around classic hip-hop breaks that hit hard and stay consistent.

Kool Keith is rapping circles around his peers here, especially on tracks like “1,2 1,2.” “The Saga of Dandy, The Devil & Day” is a full song about Negro League baseball, naming players and moments at a time when almost no one in rap was doing that. The album also leans further into abstraction on “Two Brothers With Checks (San Francisco, Harvey).”

This was the last Ultramagnetic MC’s album before Kool Keith began his long run of solo work under multiple personas, including Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, Black Elvis, and others.
