The first LP released on Bobbito Garcia’s Fondle ’Em Records, The Juggaknots was recorded several years earlier for Elektra but never released. Bobbito picked it up and issued it as-is, giving the label one of its defining records. The sound is raw mid-90s New York: loop-driven beats, spare drums, and long verses built for close listening rather than hooks.
The group was a family project led by Breeze Brewin and his brother Buddy Slim, with Queen Herawin joining on later releases. Breeze was never widely known to the general public, but among MCs, DJs, and deep listeners he’s often cited as a personal favorite. That reputation carried real weight—Prince Paul chose Breeze as the lead voice for A Prince Among Thieves, a project he made immediately after his three landmark albums with De La Soul. He could have worked with anyone, and he picked Breeze.
The centerpiece is “Clear Blue Skies,” where Breeze plays both a white son and his racist father arguing over the son’s Black girlfriend, set over a Soul II Soul sample. “Troubleman” flips John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things—a bright, familiar melody—into something tense and aggressive, turning it into a straight battle track.
One of the absolute masterpieces of the late-90s New York underground—WKCR, Stretch & Bobbito, Fondle ’Em, Rawkus era.
