Stone Crazy is the Beatnuts’ first full album as a duo and the record that introduced them as a complete group rather than just producers. The sound is dense and sample-driven, pulling heavily from funk, soul, and Latin records, with thick drums and beats that immediately connected with DJs.
“Off the Books” was a genuine breakout and the world’s introduction to Big Pun, whose verse landed as an instant event record. The track helped push the album well beyond the underground and became a defining New York rap moment of the mid-90s.
The label also believed it had another major single with “Give Me the Ass,” built on a Patrice Rushen sample, but those plans were derailed when Will Smith released “Men in Black” using the same sample just before it dropped.
Those tracks are just two examples among many, with the rest of the album filled out by raw beats, hard drums, and the fully formed Beatnuts sound that would define their run.
