One of the great hip-hop EPs. After hearing their beats handed to rappers they didn’t feel were up to par, the Beatnuts decided to drop a record of their own. Intoxicated Demons is them taking control early and proving the beats could stand on their own.
The cover is a direct tribute to Hank Mobley’s Blue Note classic The Turnaround!, a deep-crated hard bop record long revered by jazz collectors. That influence runs through the EP. The songs range from hard, aggressive cuts like “Reign of the Tec” and “Psycho Dwarf” to the smoother, more melodic “No Equal” and “Third of the Trio.”
This was still the Beatnuts as a trio, and the presence of Fashion adds another layer to the record. Short but loaded, the EP packs more classic hip-hop into its runtime than many full-length albums.
