One of the most creative albums of the late ’80s, In Full Gear blended live instruments with samples and pushed hip-hop’s possibilities forward. The breakout single “Talkin’ All That Jazz,” built on Lonnie Liston Smith’s “Expansions,” became a massive hit and a sharp defense of sampling at a time when the practice was under attack. The album also stands out as an early showcase for a young Prince Paul, then the group’s DJ, before he went on to reshape rap with De La Soul.
