Debut from Slum Village, recorded in the mid-’90s and built around early J Dilla production.
This is the tape that started circulating and had people like Questlove and Q-Tip trying to track down who made it. Dilla’s sound is already fully formed—off-grid drums, chopped samples, and a feel that stood apart from what was coming out at the time.
The album built its reputation through word of mouth before any official release. This is where Dilla’s name first started carrying weight, and it holds up as the starting point for everything that followed.
