After years of label politics and shelved projects, Q-Tip finally delivered an album that reminded listeners he wasn’t just the voice of A Tribe Called Quest—he was the mastermind behind one of music’s greatest groups. Unlike his uneven solo debut, The Renaissance was universally praised, a seamless blend of jazz-inflected production, thoughtful rhymes, and a mature but still playful energy. Cuts like “Gettin’ Up,” “Move,” and “Life Is Better” (with Norah Jones) showed his range, while the whole record felt like a natural extension of Tribe’s legacy. More than a comeback, The Renaissance proved Q-Tip could still set the standard for hip-hop well into the 2000s.
