How do you follow up when your debut is widely considered the greatest hip-hop debut of all time? Nas answered with It Was Written—a sharper, more ambitious record that traded Illmatic’s dusty minimalism for cinematic beats and bigger scope. With production from Trackmasters, Havoc, Dr. Dre, and L.E.S., it moved him from street poet to global star. “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” gave him his first major hit, while “The Message” and “I Gave You Power” proved his storytelling was still unmatched. It sold far more than Illmatic, but was misunderstood at the time; in hindsight, most fans now see the two as 1A and 1B in his catalog.
