Nas lived up to the impossible task of following Illmatic—often called the greatest debut in hip-hop history—by delivering another classic. Initially brushed off by some die-hards for its glossier sound, the album has since been reclaimed as his second great record. The Trackmasters handled much of the production, but DJ Premier and Havoc also contributed, giving it both radio polish and Queensbridge grit. With hits like “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” and “Street Dreams,” alongside lyrical showcases like “The Message,” it cemented Nas as more than a one-album wonder.
