Mos Def’s debut solo album, and one of the most celebrated hip-hop records of the late ’90s. The production pulls from jazz, soul, and boom-bap, giving Mos a wide canvas for his thoughtful rhymes and sharp delivery. “Ms. Fat Booty” and “Mathematics” became instant standouts, while “Umi Says” showed his ability to make something soulful and timeless. Intelligent but never stiff, the album proved Mos could carry a full project on his own after Black Star, and it’s now seen as a classic of the era.
