Released in 1995 when Prodigy and Havoc were still barely out of their teens, this is the record that redefined grimy East Coast rap. Queensbridge to the core, it’s cold, cinematic, and relentless — Havoc handled most of the production himself, a breakthrough moment that cemented him as one of hip-hop’s great beatmakers. But it also features crucial guidance from Q-Tip (credited as The Abstract), who produced several tracks and acted as a mentor, helping the duo shape their sound. “Shook Ones Pt. II” — often considered the greatest rap beat ever — is the eternal centerpiece, but the whole record is wall-to-wall: “Survival of the Fittest,” “Eye for an Eye” with Nas and Raekwon, “Up North Trip.” A landmark album, not just for Queensbridge, but for all of ’90s rap.
