Jeru’s second album, produced entirely by DJ Premier, kept the same stripped-down, hard-edged sound that made The Sun Rises in the East a classic. Premo’s beats are raw and minimal, built around sharp drums and eerie samples that give Jeru plenty of space to deliver his dense rhymes. Tracks like “Ya Playin’ Yaself,” “One Day,” and “Me or the Papes” stand out as some of his strongest work, with lyrics aimed at fake rappers and industry corruption. The album holds a special place as part of Premier’s mid-’90s hot streak and as proof that Jeru was one of the most uncompromising voices of the era.
