Rather than a straight debut, this album reintroduced the group on Rick Rubin’s Def American label, pulling tracks from their earlier regional releases and remixing or re-recording them to hit harder. With Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill together in the lineup, Rubin gave songs like “Mind of a Lunatic,” “Size Ain’t Shit,” and “Gangsta of Love” a sharper, more aggressive edge. The result was a national launchpad for the Geto Boys’ raw mix of horrorcore imagery and social commentary, and the record that put Houston rap firmly on the map.

The 1990 self-titled album re-introduced the Houston group with its definitive lineup of Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill. Dark, violent, and often controversial, it helped put Southern hip-hop on the national map. Songs like “Mind of a Lunatic” and “The Other Level” showed both the horror-movie edge and social commentary that would become their trademark.
