Part of Gang Starr’s four-album run of classics, this one found Premier pushing back against the “jazz rap” tag by chopping from more abstract sources and showing how versatile his sound really was. The production is stripped and raw, built on jagged drums and unexpected samples, and Guru met it with some of his sharpest lyricism. “Mass Appeal” became the anthem, while “DWYCK,” “Code of the Streets,” and “Tonz ’O Gunz” kept the edge. A peak moment for both MC and producer.
