“Things just ain’t the same for gangstas…” — the opening line of “The Watcher” signaled that Dre’s return would be more reflective and deliberate than before. Seven years after The Chronic, he came back with a cleaner, heavier blueprint: layered strings, deep sub-bass, and drums locked to perfection. The Jay-Z–penned “Still D.R.E.” reunited Dre and Snoop, while “Forgot About Dre” and “What’s the Difference” showcased a young Eminem stepping into his prime. “The Next Episode” capped it off. Precise and cinematic, 2001 proved Dre hadn’t just kept up—he’d reset the bar again.
