“It might blow up, but it won’t go pop.” De La set the tone from the start with their refusal to chase trends, and the result was their third classic in a row. It also marked their final outing with unofficial fourth member and producer Prince Paul, whose fingerprints are all over the dense, funky sound. With standouts like “Ego Trippin’ (Part Two)” and “I Am I Be,” the album showed a group doubling down on artistry over industry, expanding hip-hop’s creative boundaries yet again.
