An expanded version of their independently released Funcrusher EP, this album became a cornerstone of underground hip-hop. El-P, Bigg Jus, and Mr. Len delivered dense, futuristic beats and sharp, confrontational rhymes that stood apart from the mainstream. Released through Rawkus Records after early support from Fat Beats and airplay on Stretch & Bobbito, it set the template for independent rap in the late ’90s. Tracks like “8 Steps to Perfection,” “Vital Nerve,” and “The Fire in Which You Burn” became underground touchstones. It also marked the start of El-P’s path to wider fame as a solo artist and eventually as half of Run the Jewels.
