In God We Trust is Brand Nubian’s second album, released after the departure of Grand Puba and DJ Alamo, leaving Sadat X and Lord Jamar to carry the group forward. The record leans heavily into Five Percent Nation themes, with religion, politics, and Black identity woven directly into the lyrics rather than treated as side commentary.
“Allah U Akbar” opens the album by setting a militant tone, while “Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down” became the most visible track, drawing attention for both its aggression and controversy. “Meaning of the 5%” spells out the group’s ideology directly, making the album’s perspective impossible to miss.
Production from the group and collaborators like Diamond D keeps the sound grounded in early-90s New York boom-bap. The album stands as a sharper, more confrontational follow-up that defined Brand Nubian’s post-Puba identity.
