Produced by Rick Rubin when he was still running Def Jam out of his NYU dorm room, the Beasties’ debut captured three ex-punks diving headfirst into the city’s hip-hop scene. The album fused rap with rock samples from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, breaking new ground in the process. “Fight For Your Right,” written as a joke, turned into an MTV anthem, while “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” (with Slayer’s Kerry King on guitar) and “Brass Monkey” became party staples. “Paul Revere” and “Slow and Low,” both written with Run-D.M.C., showed the group’s deep connection to the scene they came out of. Raw, funny, and aggressive, it was the record that carried rap into the mainstream.
